Apple Devices- Swipe up from the bottom and hold the screen in the center. All currently opened apps should pop up and you'd just want to swipe up to clear the application.
Android - Press the 3 lines on the bottom right of your phone and swipe up from the bottom to close the app. This Hard closes any app that is open.
Merely opening another application does not close an app. All apps should be closed out periodically to keep the phone and applications working properly.
